Mike Mettler: I’m glad we’re finally getting a vinyl representation of that Little Ol’ Band live session the three of you guys did together in Texas. There's one thing for sure and it’s on my mind. Gibbons, 72, and I discussed how RAW came to pass, why physical proximity can lead to better performances, and what records are never too far from his vintage Thorens turntable. As we speak, we’re back to making loud noise for ya!” (If you want to see ZZ Top on their current RAW Whisky Tour, the upcoming tour dates are here.) “At one point we were wondering, was this a forgotten endeavor? But the good news is, now that the curtain has lifted, it means we’re getting back in the swing as we like it. “That’s what we do,” Gibbons admits about ZZ Top’s predilection for being out on the road.

Prior to his passing, Hill gave both Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard, his bandmates for 51-plus years, the greenlight to carry on without him, anointing the band’s longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis to take over on bass. (As of this posting, it’s currently going for $85-$95, according to Discogs.)Īs it stands, RAW is likely to be the last ZZ Top recording to feature original bassist Dusty Hill, who passed away at age 72 a little over a year ago on July 28, 2021. The limited-edition colored-vinyl version dubbed “Lava” sold out almost immediately - though the more resourceful of you can find a copy of said Lava wax, of course. The RAW LP ships on August 7, and it can be pre-ordered here for $26.98.

G-Mane Moon and Jake Mann, mixed by Ryan Hewitt, and mastered by Howie Weinberg and Will Borza at Howie Weinberg Mastering. RAW is available as a standard black-vinyl 180g 1LP. Today, we’re discussing the merits of ZZ Top’s RAW – That Little Ol’ Band From Texas’ Original Soundtrack (Tower Top Tours, Inc./BMG), an LP born and bred from an intimate performance that initially took place for the band’s June 2019 documentary, That Little Ol’ Band From Texas. Billy G calls in to MM HQ while he’s being driven across the desert somewhere in Arizona where the reception is spotty at best, and the concurrent soundtrack in my head leans toward early ZZ Top tracks like “Salt Lick,” “Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell,” and, of course, “Asleep in the Desert.” I believe that they most likely do, as the recent CD reissues of "Tres Hombres" & "Fandango"! featuring the original mixes can attest to, not to mention the original mixes featured on the "Chrome Smoke & Bar-B-Q" box set.It seems only fitting that I’m speaking with ZZ Top’s guitarist/vocalist Billy F Gibbons - a.k.a. I have to wonder if the band themselves think it was a mistake, in hindsight. That HAS to be what the band themselves had in mind when they released the ZZ Top "Six Pack", & all of the other individual 70's albums on CD, for that matter. And maybe, just maybe, someone like that may prefer the remixes because they sound closer to the ZZ Top music that they are/were more familiar with. The only 70's ZZ Top I was familiar with at that time were the 2 classic rock radio staples, "La Grange" & "Tush". I know that's the case for me, having been born in 1971. One possible scenario might be that your first exposure to ZZ Top was in the 80's, when they became very popular via MTV & their videos. Thanks!Ĭlick to expand.I really don't expect to, but you never know.

Feel free to comment as much as you'd like in the thread if you've say, only heard the CD's, for example. PLEASE do not vote unless you've heard both, as this would render the poll completely meaningless.

Some tracks were also issued in their original mix on the "Chrome Smoke & Bar-B-Q" CD box set from a few years back.įor those who HAVE HEARD both mixes of even just one or two of these albums, feel free to vote in the poll. A few years back, Rhino did issue the original mixes of "Tres Hombres" & "Fandango"!, so thankfully at least those 2 are available for those listeners who do not have a vinyl rig in their setup. Up until just a few years ago, none of these albums were available on CD with the original mixes. "ZZ Top's First Album", "Rio Grande Mud", "Tres Hombres", "Fandango"!, & "Tejas". With all of the ZZ Top talk lately, I thought it would be interesting to see if there is a single soul out there who actually prefers the 80's remixes to the original 70's mixes of their albums
